How to start an independent bookshop (virtually)

MIB

“Share the books you love now. Discover what you’ll love next.”

Have you ever dreamed about having your own bookshop? Well thanks to My Independent Bookshop, we’re all a little closer to that dream. MIB is a new social platform which allows you to set up your own virtual bookshop to share your favourite reads as well as discover, recommend and review books online. It’s super simple – in fact the trickiest part is choosing a name!

There’s something very special about sharing book recommendations with friends, and MIB enables you to get recommendations from hundreds of friends you’ve never even met, not to mention your favourite authors and independent bookshops who have set up virtual shop too.

Better still, My Independent Bookshop allows you to connect your virtual bookshop with a real life independent bookshop, which receives a commission for any books bought through your shop. So it’s win win!

Words cannot do justice

Setting up shop

Before you open for business you need to decide on a name, select a look and theme for your shop (down to the style of your shelves!) and twelve of your favourite books. Write a few words about why you love them, and open your doors!

Window shopping

Once you’re up and running, why not stick around for some window shopping? You can search by genre, title, or wander down themed streets. Here are a few of our current favourites.

But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself! Stroll along the virtual streets, pop into their bookshops and rummage through their shelves. You never know what you might find.

The Puffin Emporium

The Puffin Emporium is riffling through it’s bookshelves each month to find books which relate to a theme – chosen by you. We’re currently stocking 12 delicious books featuring food (glorious food) but we’re hungry for a new challenge. Tweet us your inventive themes using the hashtag #ChallengePuffin and we’ll do our best to find 12 titles that fulfil your criteria. The wackier the better – we’re thinking robots, tap-dancing animals, and under the sea . . .
